Why do they do that thing when it rains? Don't they know the sidewalks are suicide?

Re: Worm suicide -- why why why?
Sun, April 29, 2007 - 8:18 AMbecause they're worms not fish. when the soil is saturated with water all the air space is gone--exchanged for rainwater. Gotta breathe somewhere so many come up to the surface and in the city that means pavement. It's sad I agree.... -

Re: Worm suicide -- why why why?
Sun, April 29, 2007 - 9:44 PMthey come up out of the waterlogged soil to breath. and if they end up in a puddle they will drown. -

Re: Worm suicide -- why why why?
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 6:09 AMHow do they know where there is more water or less? Is "up" an instinct when it starts to rain? They can't see, can they? -

Re: Worm suicide -- why why why?
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 1:03 PMthey have lots of other sense to rely on (they have chemosensibility, smell and taste if you will). and they can feel a pressure differential. the soil beneath the topsoil layer isn't where they wanna be probably (because its not very nutritious since it has a very low organic material content). it may be instinctive for them to get outta the dirt when its all waterlogged. but i'm sure they have a way to sense which way is up. if they didn't they'd get lost all the time. for some reason certain species (like "nightcrawlers") like to come up outta the dirt in the late night early morning anyway (which is why birds go worm hunting early in the morning). i think they do it to clear their tunnels of the "castings". -
